South Africa and Chile have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to support each other's fishery and aquaculture sectors and combat illegal fishing. The agreement includes research collaboration, technology exchange, capacity building, and efforts to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. The MoU follows both countries' ratification of a World Trade Organization agreement on fisheries subsidies. The partnership aims to boost the economic contribution of the fisheries and aquaculture sectors by providing small scale and commercial fishers with increased earnings and increasing seafood export volumes. A joint technical team will oversee the implementation of the agreement, with future bilateral meetings planned to further strengthen the partnership.
