Brazil's Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) has developed a genetically modified (GM) sugarcane, BtRR, in collaboration with startup PangeiaBiotech, which is resistant to Diatraea Saccharalis larvae and the herbicide glyphosate. This makes it the first dual-resistant transgenic sugarcane in the world. The GM sugarcane is herbicide-tolerant up to four times the usual dose for glyphosate treatments, and expresses two bioinsecticidal proteins that are toxic to susceptible insects but harmless to other organisms. This technology is expected to increase the useful life of the technology and promote sustainable production by optimizing the control of Diatraea Saccharalis, a major pest in sugarcane that causes an estimated $5 billion in annual losses to the industry.
