The Party for the Animals in the Netherlands is calling for an end to duck farming due to bird flu outbreaks, claiming that over 19% of ducks have been gassed since the start of the current bird flu season. However, Minister Staghouwer clarified that the fluctuating number of ducks on farms makes it impossible to provide an exact percentage of animals killed. Since October 2021, two duck companies were infected in 2021 and eight in 2022, leading to the culling of approximately 213,200 ducks. The minister is hopeful for the development of an effective preventive vaccine and is conducting research into the entry routes of the bird flu virus. Despite the challenges, he assures that necessary measures are being taken to prevent and combat bird flu. The Party for the Animals highlights that most Dutch duck meat is exported.
