Sugarcane crop in Brazil faces climate and economic challenges

The 2024 sugarcane harvest is coming to an end, marked by significant challenges, especially with regard to the weather. The combination of adverse conditions, such as droughts and fires, has affected the productivity of many sugarcane fields, resulting in a harvest below expectations in several regions of Brazil. The sugarcane and ethanol sector is largely influenced by external factors, such as the global economy, oil prices and weather conditions. When one of these elements does not align, the repercussions on the mills are practically immediate. In a sugarcane field located in Echaporã, in the interior of São Paulo, the estimate is a 10% reduction in revenue compared to the previous harvest. Despite having escaped the fires that severely affected the region in recent months, the location still suffered from the impact of the unsuitable weather.
