The number of dairy farms in Sweden has been rapidly decreasing, dropping by 93 out of 100 since 1982, leaving only 2,795 in 2022. Despite this, the number of dairy cows and the milk yield per cow have increased, with the average number of cows per farm growing from 16 to 106, and milk yield per cow rising from 5,000 kg to 9,000 kg per year. However, the total amount of milk produced has seen a 21% decrease from 3.53 million tons in 1982 to 2.78 million tons in 2021, despite the higher yield per cow. This trend was particularly noticeable in the 1990s, but productivity per cow has recently started to increase at a faster rate.
