Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa of Tanzania has unveiled a strategy to boost sunflower production with the goal of reducing the country's reliance on imported cooking oil, which costs the nation Sh474 billion annually. This plan aims to double sunflower production to one million tonnes by 2025, meeting 60% of the country's cooking oil demand. To facilitate this, the government has increased funding for the Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute and the Agricultural Seeds Authority. The prime minister called on regional and district commissioners to encourage sunflower cultivation among farmers. The government also aims to address challenges such as the lack of seed availability and the absence of financial linkages between farmers and processors.
