The Director-General of Thailand's Department of Agriculture, Mr. Rapeepat Chantharasriwong, has warned both Thai and foreign tourists about the illegal importation of fresh fruit without a phytosanitary certificate or an import license. This offense, which falls under the Plant Quarantine Act, B.E. 2507, and its amendments, could result in imprisonment for up to a year, a fine of up to 20,000 baht, or both. The warning comes after incidents at Suvarnabhumi Airport, where passengers, often influenced by tour guides, were found to be bringing in large quantities of fresh fruit without the necessary documentation. The Department of Agriculture is working with airport authorities to raise awareness about the regulations to prevent the illegal importation of fresh produce and protect the country from the risk of spreading plant diseases and pests.
