The head size of Hungarian garlic has become smaller, but this year's crop is of good quality

Due to the dry and hot weather in Spain, the leading producer of garlic both in Europe and the world, the harvest and the supply of larger-sized garlic decreased this year. Rising costs (transportation, storage) have adversely affected the competitiveness of garlic, as more than 70 percent of Spanish production is exported to nearly 60 countries. According to Eurostat data, Spain sells the most fresh garlic on the EU's internal market, followed by the Netherlands by orders of magnitude. Spain delivered 5 percent (67.7 thousand tons) and the Netherlands 16 percent (17.5 thousand tons) less garlic to the community market in the first eight months of 2022 compared to the same period of the previous year. In terms of third countries, the community is a net exporter of garlic: exports were 76.1 thousand tons and imports were 50.1 thousand tons in 2021.
