In the first half of 2023, the production of highly processed grain products, including native starches, decreased slightly in Russia due to industry restructuring and a focus on new markets. Production of native starches, including wheat, corn, and potato starch, all saw declines ranging from 3% to 19%. Import and export volumes of all types of starch also decreased significantly, with corn, wheat, and potato starch imports falling by 40% and exports by 23%. Despite this, the production of plant proteins like wheat gluten and corn gluten showed promise, with a significant portion being exported due to limited domestic demand.
