Despite lower monthly trade flows, the EU food and beverage industry continued to generate a solid trade surplus in January 2026. Part of the correction in trade values reflects lower prices of key commodities, particularly cocoa products. The EU trade surplus in the food and beverage industry amounted to 3.2 billion euros in January, remaining 4% higher than January 2025. In January 2026, the EU exported goods worth 17.5 billion euros, a decline of 9% on a monthly basis and 8% on a yearly basis, due to reduced export volumes and prices in the main product categories. The main increase in exports was in cereals (+ 45 million euros, +6%, due to larger volumes) and fruits and nuts (+ 31 million euros, +5%, mainly due to increased exports of apples and pears).
