The Central Statistical Office has reported a decrease in the area and yield of garlic in the last five years, with yield ranging from 5.2 to 7.9 thousand tons and exports falling by 41% to 272 tons in the first eight months of 2022. However, garlic imports in the EU increased by 19% to 1.87 thousand tons, with a 153% increase in imports from Spain and an 82% decrease from the Netherlands. The EU is a net exporter of garlic, with exports to the community standing at 76.1 thousand tons and imports at 50.1 thousand tons in 2021, and imports of fresh garlic increasing by 10% to 41.1 thousand tons in the first eight months of 2022, mainly from China and Egypt.
