The Tobacco Authority of Thailand aims to boost exports this year, aiming to raise its cigarette export revenue to 1.2 billion baht, up from 800 million baht in 2025.

Authority governor Poomjit Pongpanngam said cigarette exports have grown steadily, from 10 million baht in 2022 to 200 million in 2024, then surging to 800 million last year. He said the authority’s main export market is Myanmar, followed by countries in the Middle East and nations with large Thai workforces. Mr Poomjit said the domestic cigarette market has contracted due to the economic slowdown and increasing competition from imported cigarettes. As a result, the market share of cigarettes enjoyed by the state enterprise, which was previously a domestic monopoly, has declined substantially. The steady decrease in smoking further complicates matters, forcing tobacco companies worldwide to transition into other activities.
