Agricultural organizations in Extremadura, Spain, have pointed out a significant issue that threatens the sustainability of tobacco farming in the region. They argue that the current payment to farmers, at 2.30 euros per kilo, is significantly below the production cost of 2.75 euros, leading to a unsustainable financial situation for farmers. This problem not only risks the future of tobacco cultivation in the country, concentrated in the north of Cáceres, but also endangers the livelihoods of 20,000 families reliant on the industry. These organizations are urgently calling for a change in the industry's approach, seeking fairer prices and more stable contracts for farmers. So far, discussions with the Ministry of Agriculture and other stakeholders have not led to any resolutions, prompting the organizations to convene a meeting with all tobacco producers to address the crisis and consider further actions.
