The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in Turkey is taking steps to boost the country's cocoon production through a 100% grant support for silkworm breeding. This initiative is part of an effort to revive the tradition of silkworm farming, which was popular during the Ottoman period but declined in later years. The ministry's goal is to increase annual wet cocoon production from 76 tons to 200 tons, creating employment for 1,000 people and boosting exports. The funding is available to producers across Turkey, with a particular focus on regions like Eskişehir, Bursa, Bilecik, and Diyarbakır. The ministry is also planning to increase silkworm investments further in 2022, tapping into the growing demand for natural products like silk.
