The Sugarcane Industry Union (Unica) predicts a significant increase in sugarcane crushing in south-central Brazil in the second half of March, reaching around 5 million tonnes. This is a substantial rise from the same period last year, which saw only 1.18 million tons. The preparation for the new 2023/24 harvest has led to more plants being operational, with expectations to double the number from the previous year. Despite a slight delay due to heavy rainfall, the new harvest is projected to yield over 600 million tons, marking a growth of over 5% from the previous cycle. However, ethanol sales in the first half of March have seen a decrease, with hydrous ethanol sales falling by 19.79% compared to the same period in the previous harvest due to competitive gasoline prices.
