The United States had 11.6 million head of cattle and calves on feed for slaughter as of Oct. 1, 2024, slightly below the previous year, according to the USDA NASS report. The inventory included 7.00 million steers and steer calves, up 1%, and 4.60 million heifers and heifer calves, down 1%. Placements in feedlots in September were 2% below 2023 at 2.16 million head, and marketings of fed cattle also increased by 2% from 2023 to 1.70 million head. Despite slight concerns, traders focused on the market's fundamentals and allowed for a higher close in the live cattle complex following the report's release.
