Vihiga County in Kenya is implementing a project to revive banana farming after overcoming a severe outbreak of Banana Xanthomones Wilt (BXW) in 2016. The disease, which previously affected areas in Uganda and other Kenyan counties, prompted farmers to destroy infected crops to prevent further spread. With support from the Agricultural Sector Development Support Programme, the county is now encouraging farmers to resume banana cultivation. A significant step towards the revival of the banana farming industry includes the donation of a banana crisps processing machine to a local group by Governor Wilbur Ottichilo, with plans to produce various banana-based products. The county also aims to ensure that these products meet the necessary standards and will assist farmer groups in accessing international markets.
