Oman's Najd region farmers in Thumrait, Dhofar governorate, have successfully produced nearly 5,940 tonnes of wheat in the 2022-23 season across 81 farms, spanning about 2,100 hectares, thanks to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources' (MAFWR) initiatives. These initiatives aim at increasing food production to align with Oman Vision 2040's goals, and include strategies such as promoting innovative farming methods, expanding cultivation areas, implementing agricultural mechanisation and modern irrigation systems, and utilising high-quality seed varieties. The ministry is also combating agricultural pests, diseases, and bird threats through dedicated campaigns and providing quality wheat varieties to farmers. To further support wheat production, the Council of Ministers has approved a RO5mn plan for the period until 2027 and intends to lease out usufruct lands for wheat cultivation in several governorates.
