President Joko Widodo of Indonesia has issued a presidential regulation to accelerate the country's salting activities in an effort to become self-sufficient in salt production by 2024, aiming to reduce reliance on imports. The regulation emphasizes the need for domestic production to meet various industrial, food, and pharmaceutical demands. However, Indonesia's reliance on salt imports has been high due to the inadequacy of locally produced salt to meet industrial standards and limited suitable land for salt production. The country imported over 2.83 million tons of salt in 2021, valued at US$107.5 million, marking a significant increase from the previous year. The low domestic production is attributed to natural factors like moderate La Nina and the Indian Ocean Dipole. This background has led to President Widodo's decision to ban salt imports in the coming years to encourage domestic production and achieve self-sufficiency.
