In Brazil's Rio Grande do Sul state, farmers are planting various winter crops, including wheat, oats, barley, and canola. Oats are the second-largest winter crop in the state, with 365,080 hectares (ha) planted. The planting of white oats is nearly complete, with 95% of the total area sown, 92% in germination and vegetative development, and 8% at the beginning of the flowering phase, with minimal insect or disease pressure. The expected oat yield in the state is 2,340 kg/ha. In Canada, farmers increased the planting of wheat, canola, barley, corn, and soybeans in 2023 compared to the previous year. However, they planted fewer acres of oats, lentils, and peas. Oats planting saw a significant decrease of 17% from the initial estimate in March, reaching 2.54 million acres, the lowest recorded oats acreage in history. The decline in oat planting may be attributed to the abundant national supply caused by strong production in 2022, leading producers to reduce the area dedicated to oats.
