According to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the probability of the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) strain detected in dairy cows in the United States reaching Europe is very low. However, EFSA experts conclude that if the virus were to reach the EU, the impact could be considerable. To ensure the preparedness of the affected countries, the EFSA recommends raising awareness among farmers and veterinarians and strengthening surveillance to allow for early detection. At the request of the European Commission, the EFSA has focused on the risk of infection of dairy cattle and poultry in the EU by the specific H5N1 virus genotype circulating among American dairy cattle.
