Chile's unique variety of white strawberries, which are the genetic precursors of the modern garden strawberry, are facing extinction. The cultivation area is decreasing, and fewer farmers know how to grow them. The berries are harvested over a five-week period, during which a festival is held in Chile. Climate change and the closure of the Lebu Los Sousses railway, which delivered the harvest to Concepcion, have further reduced berry production. Currently, only two regions are growing white strawberries, and less than two dozen families in the "strawberry" province still cultivate them.
