New tree planting projects are being implemented in order to increase the date that is exported in Iraq and has the potential to be the second source of income in the country after oil. Dozens of dates such as "Zehdi", "Hastavi", "Diri", "Maktum" and "Barhi" are grown in the capital Baghdad, the Middle Euphrates and the southern regions of the country. Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture Spokesperson Mohammed Huzayi and Ministry Undersecretary Mehdi al-Kaysi and related persons made statements to AA correspondent about the developments in date production and export. Recalling that there were problems in date production due to the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s and the Gulf War of 1990, spokesperson Huzayi said, "Until the 1980s, there were more than 30 million date trees in Iraq. Farmers abandoned their fields and stopped farming, and there was a serious decrease in the number of dates. At that time, the number of date palm trees decreased to 8 million." said.
