More than 80,000 producing families nationwide have increased their economic profitability by 40% thanks to the breeding and marketing of Andina breed guinea pigs, developed by the National Institute of Agrarian Innovation (INIA), which stands out for its high genetic quality. In the framework of the celebration ceremony for the 20 years of the birth of this guinea pig breed in the city of Huarmey (Áncash), the executive president of INIA, Jorge Ganoza Roncal, detailed that the release of Andina is the result of a genetic improvement process, aimed at strengthening food security and the competitiveness of producers. The official added that the Andina breed has been consolidated as a maternal genetic base of high value, recognized mainly for its prolificacy, expressed in larger litter size, high survival of offspring, and remarkable fertility, allowing producers to obtain higher economic yield per mother compared to other breeds.
