Jordan has temporarily closed all animal shelters due to a outbreak of a new strain of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). The country's Ministry of Agriculture has also stopped imports of roughage from Iraq to control the spread of the disease. The majority of the FMD cases have been reported in the Al Dhuleil region in northern Zarqa province. The ministry is implementing measures such as veterinary quarantine, sanitation, and vaccination, and has launched a campaign to vaccinate livestock and establish veterinary hospitals. The cost of the outbreak is estimated to be nearly 25 million Jordanian dinars (US$35.24 million).
