Autumn sowing in Germany for the 2022 harvest: More winter rape, winter cereals at the previous year's level

In autumn 2021, the farms in Germany sown winter rape on 1.1 million hectares of arable land for the 2022 harvest. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the sown area of winter rape for the coming harvest is 86,700 ha (+ 8.7%) above the area under cultivation in 2021. The largest changes in area can be observed in the states of Lower Saxony (+13,300 ha), Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt (+11,900 ha each) and Schleswig-Holstein (+11,400 ha). Winter cereals were sown on 5.0 million hectares for the 2022 harvest. This means that the area sown for winter grain for the 2022 harvest remains almost unchanged compared to the area under cultivation in 2021 (-0.7% or -34,300 ha). Winter cereals include winter wheat, winter barley, rye and winter muddled grain as well as the wheat-rye cross triticale.
