Ecuadorian banana producers and fruit exporters have reached a agreement on a fixed price of $6.50 for a 43 pound box in 2023, but the deal is facing challenges due to fluctuating spot prices and past contract violations. The total banana exports from January to September this year saw an 8.98% decrease compared to the same period last year, leading to producer reluctance to sign contracts. The average price of a banana box in Ecuador in 2022 was $5.30, lower than the proposed $6.25 for 2023. Meanwhile, exporters are still waiting for the signing of the 2023 export contracts and are prepared to go to the free market if agreements are not reached.
