Belgium slaughters fewer pigs, chickens and cattle

In 2022, 25.83 million animals will be slaughtered every month. In numbers, chickens are in the majority, with 24.8 million per month. In terms of weight, the 877,000 pigs account for the largest share at 60 percent. In total, 10.5 million pigs were slaughtered last year. This number is lower than in the crisis year 2019 and is 9 percent lower than in 2021. From 2020 to 2021, there was an increase of 2 percent. Over the whole of 2022, 755,000 cattle were led to the slaughter. That is 2 percent less than in 2021 and 4 percent less than in 2020.
