Belgium saw a 2% decrease in animal slaughter in 2022 compared to the previous year, with a total of 309.7 million heads slaughtered. The number of pigs slaughtered fell by nearly 10% to 10.5 million, the lowest in 30 years. Despite this, pigs still made up the largest share of the total weight of animal slaughter, at 1,030 tons or 60%. The average monthly slaughter in 2022 included 25 million chickens, 877 thousand pigs, 63 thousand cattle, and other smaller numbers of turkeys, sheep, ducks, goats, and horses.
