Samples from the flock were analyzed at the Michigan State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory and confirmed by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service laboratories in Ames, Iowa. State authorities have quarantined the location where the outbreak occurred in Kalamazoo County and the birds on that property "will be depopulated to prevent the spread of the disease," the USDA said in a statement, noting that the birds in that flock they will not enter the food system.
