Bluetongue disease, transmitted by the Culicoides imicola mosquito, is causing significant trouble for sheep and goat farms in Sardinia and Piedmont, Italy. The disease, primarily affecting regions like Nuoro and Oristano in Sardinia and Sulcis in Piedmont, has led to nearly 670 outbreaks, predominantly of serotype 3 (BTV3). The agricultural union, Coldiretti Sardegna, has criticized the regional government for their lack of action and inertia in addressing the crisis. In response, Piedmont is developing a vaccine in collaboration with the Piedmont Zooprophylactic Institute to combat the disease, with a goal of having 20,000 doses available soon.
