Indonesia is facing a persistent problem with insufficient domestic production of salt, despite having the world's longest coastline. The country relied on imports of 2.61 million tons of salt in 2020, spending US $ 94.55 million, and has continued to import salt into 2021. The government, however, is still gathering data on Indonesia's salt demand and plans to cover any shortages through imports. The main importers of Indonesian salt are Australia, China, India, Thailand, and New Zealand.
