The amount was well below that recorded in 2020, when Brazil exported 1.813 million t as a result of strong global demand caused by the height of the covid-19 pandemic, and was also lower than the amount exported in 2019. “Rice exports returned, in 2021, to the level of foreign sales in 2019, in value, due to the appreciation of the dollar”, observes Abiarroz Exports manager, Carolina Telles Matos. “However, in terms of quantity, sales were 20% and 36% lower than in 2019 and 2020, respectively.” The retraction in the volume exported in the last year had as one of the main factors the logistical problems. “We had a strong reduction in the supply of maritime transport, which caused a significant increase in ship freight, in addition to the lack of containers”, points out Carolina.
