Brazil's pig slaughter increased to record levels in 2022

Each month in 2022 production was highest year-on-year, with the highest increase seen in May (+417.01 thousand heads). In 2022, fresh pork exports remained at a high level, -0.1% below the previous year's record. The outlook for pig farming continued to be challenging, with high production costs and abundant supply, which affected profitability for producers. The slaughter of 3.10 million more pigs in 2022, compared to the previous year, was driven by increases in 19 of the 25 Brazillian states participating in the survey. There were increases in: There was a decrease in Mato Grosso (-51.68 thousand heads). Santa Catarina maintained its leading position in 2022, with 28.5% of the national pig slaughter, followed by Paraná (20.4%) and Rio Grande do Sul (17.3%). In the fourth quarter of 2022, pig slaughter totaled 13.89 million heads, up 3.4% compared with the same quarter of 2021 and down 4.0% compared with the previous quarter.
