Brussels approves 'Málaga Honey' as a Protected Designation of Origin

The European Commission has approved the incorporation of "Miel de Málaga" into its Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) registry, the institution reported this Friday. "Miel de Málaga" is produced by bees from the nectar of flowers or the processed secretions of living parts of plants in the province of Málaga. The honey "must be classified by its botanical origin, whether floral, vegetable, or honeydew," Brussels indicated in a statement. The same institution pointed out that "the geographical and climatic diversity of Málaga gives rise to eight different varieties (one multifloral and seven monofloral) that are distinguished by their unique fruity and floral aromas and flavors, which include, in particular, bitter, astringent, acidic, and salty notes that contrast with the characteristic sweetness of honey."
