Bulgaria's processing industry's increased needs and decreased sunflower imports will lead farmers to restore sunflower acreage in 2024, following a 6% decrease in sunflower sowing area in 2023. The drop in prices and large sunflower stocks due to high imports from Ukraine limited area expansion and resulted in a 23% lower gross harvest. The lifting of restrictions on imports from Ukraine and the implementation of the export licensing mechanism is expected to increase sunflower imports and domestic processing, while the production of oil crops in Ukraine is anticipated to increase in the 2023/24 season.
