The Chungnam-do Institute of Agricultural Technology has warned farmers about the potential risks of burning rice paddies and field heads during the farming season. The practice is not effective in reducing crop diseases and pests, as a study revealed that beneficial insects made up 85-90% of the creatures in rice fields, while pests accounted for 5-10%. The burning process inadvertently eliminates these natural enemies of pests. Furthermore, the burning of rice ridges in spring is ineffective against major rice pests, and can lead to forest fires and increase fine dust, a significant environmental issue. The institute has urged farmers to exercise caution and consider alternative pest management methods.
