Starting Aug. 1, Canadian canaryseed growers will be designated as official grains under the Canada Grain Act, providing them with financial protections and similar services to wheat, barley, flax, and canola growers. This move comes in response to financial losses suffered by growers following the bankruptcy of certain grain companies, most notably Ilta Grain. The Canadian Grain Commission's chief commissioner, Doug Chorney, emphasized the importance of these safeguards, particularly after unprotected canaryseed growers lost nearly $2.1 million due to Ilta's bankruptcy. The commission's decision follows broad support from the industry and is expected to incur minimal costs, with 25 out of the 28 registered canaryseed buyers in Canada already being CGC-licensed.
