Brazilian consumers got some budget relief in May with a drop in basic food prices for lunch, according to a survey by Neogrid, a reference in technology and data intelligence for the consumer chain. Products such as eggs, rice, and beans became cheaper in all regions of the country, including the South. Eggs showed the largest drop, with a reduction of 11.8%, going from R$ 1.15 to R$ 1.02 per dozen. Rice fell 5.7%, from R$ 5.82 to R$ 5.49, while beans decreased 2.7%, with the average price from R$ 6.86 to R$ 6.68. In the South, this trend was repeated, with emphasis on eggs (-7.7%), rice (-6.6%), and beans (-5.9%). On the other hand, items such as ground and whole coffee beans registered a 3.7% increase in the month, due to the 2024 crop failure caused by adverse weather and export valorization.
