Turkey is among the leading cheese producers globally, with 96.5% of its cheese derived from cow's milk and the remainder from sheep, goat, buffalo, or mixed milk. The country's cheese production peaked at 767 thousand tons in 2020 and 763 thousand tons in 2021. The European Union and the USA lead in worldwide cheese production. Turkey's cheese exports have seen a consistent increase of 33% over the last decade, primarily consisting of labneh, mozzarella, and cheddar cheeses. Domestically, the consumption of cheese, especially white cheese, has risen. Since 2001, 31 of its cheese varieties have been granted geographical indication, with efforts underway to enhance the promotion and export of these cheeses.
