In October 2023, the China-Nicaragua Free Trade Agreement was signed, promising to free up 71 percent of Nicaraguan exports to China from tariffs, including fish, shrimp, lobster, and sea cucumber. This agreement was made in exchange for Nicaragua switching diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China. Despite facing economic sanctions from the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and the E.U. due to anti-democratic moves, Nicaragua has pursued a free trade agreement with China in hopes of generating economic benefits for its citizens.
