Chinese companies are planning to lease between 3,200-4,800 hectares of state-owned land in Vientiane, Laos' capital, to cultivate durians with the intention of exporting them to China. Despite the favorable tropical climate for agriculture, Laos' agricultural sector is underdeveloped. In recent years, there has been a surge of Chinese fruit farmers in the country. However, growing and exporting durians from Laos to China faces challenges such as agricultural development and variety restrictions, and the lack of necessary market access for Laos durians. Currently, only bananas and watermelons from Laos are allowed in the Chinese market. In 2020, China's durian imports amounted to 575,000 tons, a 44% increase from the previous year, mainly from Thailand and Malaysia.
