The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock is investigating a suspected case of 'mad cow disease', which could lead to a suspension of beef exports to China. This suspension would be necessary as per the sanitary protocol signed with China, and the temporary beef supply would be covered by Uruguay and Argentina. The last detection of a similar case in Brazil was in September 2021. Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) or 'mad cow disease' was first discovered in the European Union in 1986 and has since caused hundreds of human deaths. It is primarily transmitted among cattle through the consumption of meat meal from affected animals.
