Climate change is having a negative impact on olive growing in Croatia, with heat waves becoming more frequent and lasting longer, leading to a long-term drought and an increase in wildfires. The country experienced a 47% increase in fires and a 135% increase in land burned by wildfires in the first 10 months of 2022 compared to the same period in 2021. Olive groves in Istria and Dalmatia, the country’s two most significant olive-growing regions, were among the areas burned this year. Rising sea levels in the Adriatic could also put more than a dozen cities and urban areas on Croatia’s coastal islands and the mainland, including Split, at risk.
