The Vietnamese animal feed industry imports a significant amount of meat meal and meat bone meal, with volumes and values increasing in 2022 compared to the previous year. These raw materials have high water and protein content but also carry a risk of containing harmful microorganisms that can spread diseases to both humans and animals. Many developed countries have banned the use of meat meal and meat bone meal as animal feed due to disease safety concerns, instead using them as fertilizer and fuel. There are currently regulations in Vietnam regarding certain contaminants in these products, but there is no testing for germs and viruses that cause infectious diseases in animals. Prof. Dr. La Van Kinh suggests considering regulations to minimize the disease risk to livestock or implementing stricter testing requirements for imported meat meal and meat bone meal.
