From a young age, Ms. Pham Thi Tu Hau became familiar with cassava, taro, and corn—things that feed both people and livestock. Although useful, these crops never provided a sustainable livelihood for her fellow villagers. When prices dropped, they would lose out on the season, and even when they did harvest, the prices were not good. Her father passed away early, and her mother worked hard to raise her children. Like many other rural women, she hoped her children would get an education to escape a life of hardship and instability. To fulfill her mother's wish, Hau grew up to become a pharmacist and opened a pharmacy near her home. Life seemed to be peacefully moving along. But for Hau, every time she saw her fellow villagers having to sell their produce at low prices, she felt a deep concern and relentless drive.
