The South African Cane Growers Association is set to present the findings of a cotton diversification pilot project to the Sugarcane Value Chain Masterplan Task Team. The project, which was part of an International Social and Environmental Accreditation and Labeling (ISEAL) initiative, saw a small-scale farmer in Mpumalanga harvest 3,857kg of cotton from one hectare of land, generating additional revenue of R27,000. The project highlighted the potential of cotton as a rotational crop for cane farmers, offering supplementary income and employment. The association is exploring various diversification strategies, including the production of sustainable aviation fuels, to enhance the resilience of cane growers against global shocks and demand side pressures.
