The UK government has initiated a public consultation to update the 1998 Bread and Flour Regulations, aiming to revise the nutrients added to non-wholemeal wheat flour and consider the mandatory fortification of flour with folic acid to prevent neural tube defects. This consultation, led by Defra in collaboration with health and food standard agencies from the devolved nations, is open to consumers, industry stakeholders, and regulators, and is expected to enhance public health outcomes and support the UK baking industry. However, the Real Bread Campaign expresses dissatisfaction with the consultation's scope, calling for stricter regulations on bread labels and criticizing the government's approach towards small bakeries. The consultation is set to close on 23 November 2022, with the findings set to be published thereafter.
