Chestnut processing and the production of frozen chestnut puree are handled by 5 well-known companies in Hungary, with a total annual turnover of HUF 3-4 billion - if we accept the total sales revenue from chestnut processing, we can still talk about a small segment of the Hungarian food industry. Their main product is chestnut puree. Contrary to misconceptions, however, a lighter colored chestnut puree means higher quality. Today, products with up to 100% chestnut content are available on the market. The disadvantage of chestnut processing is that it can be considered a seasonal activity - the season starts around September-October with the appearance of the harvest of the given year, while the majority of consumption is realized in the period between October and Christmas. The needs of domestic chestnut processing are not covered by the domestic crop, so a significant part of the chestnuts is obtained from imports.
