The aging of farming households is becoming increasingly serious, with the cultivation area of six major fruits this year decreasing by about 1% compared to last year. According to the Rural Economic Research Institute of Korea on the 14th, the institute's Agricultural Observation Center estimated that the cultivation area of six major fruits this year, including apples, pears, citrus fruits, mandarin oranges, grapes, and peaches, will be 104,943 hectares, a 1.0% decrease from 105,959 hectares last year. The decrease in cultivation area is 1,116 hectares, which is 3.5 times the area of Yeouido. All six major fruits show a decrease in cultivation area compared to last year, and the production of these six fruits is also expected to decrease, although weather conditions and growth situations may be variables. The cultivation area of apples decreased by 0.2% to 33,149 hectares compared to last year, with a particularly 2% decrease in the cultivation area in the Chungcheong region due to deteriorating management conditions caused by aging. However, the cultivation area in Gangwon province will increase by 3.5% due to the northward shift of apple cultivation areas. This year, the main producing area of apples, Yeongnam, accounts for 70.1% of the total, followed by Chungcheong 14.8%, Honam 7.4%, and Gangwon province with a high proportion of 6.1%. The cultivation area of pears is 91,380 hectares, a 1.9% decrease from last year, which is analyzed to be due to the aging of farming households, urban development, and the increase in fruit tree diseases and pests.
